Gaim-2.0.0 doesn't like me :-(
I'm affraid the beta versions of Gaim-2.0.0, the best multiprotocol and multiplatform IM-client imho, don't like me. Last week, I tried beta1, wich resulted in an error while loading the mono plugin. Of course, I filed a bug about it.
Meanwhile, beta2 was released last tuesday. Because I don't like to install and re-install my running version of gaim and the testing one and redo that again if it doesn't work, I wanted to have them both on my system. Ikke thought this was possible by using "ROOT=/usr/local" while emerging the new version, but it seems that gaim uses some hard links in its code so it was searching for plugins in /usr/lib/gaim instead of /usr/local/usr/lib/gaim as you can see in this bug.
OK, so the only way to test it was by completely removing the old version and installing the new (buggy) one. So I did, resulting in the same troubles with the mono-plugin. To work around this troubles, I recompiled gaim again, but now with the mono-useflag disabled. Compilation went fine, the program didn't crash anymore while loading, but there was a new problem again: I couldn't connect to the Belnet Jabber server and the ICQ-server because of some invalid proxy settings while I'm not using a proxy server and I don't need one. Maybe the proxy settings in my old gaim-1.5.0 profile weren't compatible with the new version, but that wasn't the problem. When I started gaim again with an empty profile, the errors remained and even the budy list window didn't appaer while debuging output showed my online contacts so the connection was working.
Strange stuff, especially while the gaim devs thought beta2 was very close to be the release version. Let's hope they can fix that soon. I really like gaim and I'm looking forward to the new version. But hey: it's called a beta version and marked instable for a reason! I'm glad to help testing it and finding bugs.
