VMware troubles
Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect to peer process.
I have this error when I try to power on a virtual machine. Some time ago, everything worked well. But it had been a while since I used VMware for the last time and now it didn't work anymore. I couldn't run "/etc/init.d/vmware", but that's allready solved by manually killing the running vmware processes and executing /etc/vmware/init.d/vmware.
I also added myself to the vmware group and changed permissions as in this message, but that didn't work. When I run vmware as root, everything works well after giving the serial number. chmodding some other vmware-executables even made it fail to start when I try this as regular user.

I have the same problem in Gentoo. Did the same things you did and still doesn't work. Well, what can I say, I'm looking around to find solutions. I'll let you know if I find any.
Thanks! Now, I still use VMware as root user, so it works for me, but it isn't the right way to do.
Well, it didn't take long! I added executable permissions to "other" on vmware-vmx and it worked!
chmod o+x vmware-vmx
well the permissions on that file look like this now here:
-rwsr-s--x 1 root vmware 4183128 Jan 23 21:17 vmware-vmx
Hope that works for you as well.
Whoops, it seems VMware doesn't work anymore here at all! It even doesn't as root user (with gnomesu) or with the old permissions. I think I'll have to invest some time in it, after the exams.
Thanks for sharing anyway!
run vmware-config as root fixed it for me.
cheers !
It's fixed now: just add your regular user to the vmware group.
Check your /var ... probably it is full
I had a problem when i launch vmware player "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect to peer process". To resolve this problem I run vmware-config as root then the problem is fixed for me. Thanks Frederik
had the "can't connect" error, and it turned out to be /var full
I got confused because I'd just changed kernel and so I'd been assuming the vmware-config.pl had gone wrong.
Thanks for the post really works and now VMware player is runnig
