ATI and Linux, maybe once?
Maybe once, ATI will be OK for Linux users. Yeah, I have an ATI-card myself. Till now, I didn't install the ATI proprietary drivers because of some bug, the system hangs when recovering from hibernation (suspend to disk). When I installed Gentoo Linux, I thought mobility and hibernation were more important than 3D stuff: I never play games or so. But those drivers seem also essential when watching a DVD, otherwise the movie isn't smooth. So I planned to install those f**king drivers and keep two Xorg.conf files: one with the ATI-driver and one with the open source radeon driver. I should restart my Xorg to watch a DVD. So, no big thing.
But now, when I visited the ATI support website, I saw this remarkable quote:
Initial Suspend and Resume Support
The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver version 8.19.10 has initial support for Suspend and Resume for systems with newer kernels that support this feature.
Woohoow! Seems they are working on it! That's worth a try!
(and OK, I didn't use hibernation for now, but I'll sure take a look at it, soon, once,... ;-))

They've just released those drivers.
I still have to try them.
